Meet The Band
Currently, Greyface consists of four members.
Martin Horton
Martin is 27 years old. He plays right wing, keyboards in Greyface.
In 1989 Martin was in the first year of his apprenticeship working at Sela Fasteners in Leeds (where he still works as a multi-skilled engineer). He met someone called Michael Williams who helped introduce him to music. One lunchtime they went into Leeds visiting music shops. Martin saw someone playing the piano and was so impressed since then he's never looked back.
In his early days he used to play solo, playing a modern type organ set up. He didn't really play in bands until he met Jon Mann (vocalist for Greyface). The pair of them started out in a covers band, but with not much success. They went from band to band until they decided they'd had enough and started to write their own music and lyrics.
Martin says that he was brought up on 'Jazz type standards,' which he liked because it helped develop his improvisation skills. Other influences on his music include Paul Weller, the Beatles, The Jam, Pink Floyd, The Doors, U2, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton (Cream), REM and Crowded House.
Martin reckons he'll never win the lottery and his favourite moment with Greyface so far is their debut gig at Joseph's Well in Leeds. They were the 2nd act out of 3 and stole the show, a reward they deserved after all the hard work the band had put in practising for the gig. On the night, one of Martin's synths blew up which he describes as "cool."
Martin lives in Leeds with his wife Julie and their nightmare demon cat Marlie.
Jonathan Mann
Jon is 21 and 3/4 and his position in the band depends on where he's standing at the time. He is the lead vocalist for Greyface, and sometimes plays the guitar. He's also a Grade 5 tambourine player.
He's also recently featured in Jonny Sprocket's Corned Beef Band, but mainly vocals for Greyface now. Before Greyface was formed he used to play drums with Martin and Neil, and played in a covers band whilst at University.
His influences are Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Kevin Ayers, The Beatles, and most importantly, the dour-faced businessmen who stare at him like he's some sort of freak.
His music career was started by:
· being stared at by dour-faced businessmen;
· long-life batteries;
· the need to impress girls; and
· his guitar called "Syd."
Outside the band he's an MA student studying Twentieth Century Literature. Before that he could be found stacking cardboard, licking stamps and gathering parts for excavators.
Jon says if he won the lottery he would spend it on all the needy children, and heal the world with love, beauty and friendship.
His favourite moment with Greyface was the charity gig they did last Halloween… a little matter of a wild tambourine and a rather confused audience.
Jon lives in Leeds with his conscience.
Johnny
Jonny is 21 and plays from the rear of Greyface.
He has played with Dark Season for two years prior to joining Greyface.
He says a 9-volt battery started his musical career. When he first started playing the guitar he mainly listened to Heavy Metal, but as the years passed, his tastes have widened and at the moment he is listening to Rage Against the Machines' new album 'The Velvet Underground,' and 'Oi, Dirty Bastard.'
Jonny works as a Debt management Plan Administrator outside the band. If he won the lottery he says he'd buy a million lucky dips.
His favourite moment so far with Greyface is packing the band's van.
